This week, starting on Sunday 15th, was Shrovetide. In the Russian Orthodox tradition it lasts not three but seven days and is divided into two periods: “narrow”, from Monday to Wednesday, and “broad”, from Thursday to Saturday. The last Sunday before the Great Lent is called Forgiveness Sunday and marks the period of introspection and prayer associated with the Lent.
So, I asked AI to create some pictures of me in the style of traditional Russian crafts. The photos for the Narrow Shrovetide were inspired by Gzhel and evoke the atmosphere of winter fairs and their attractions.

The photos for the Broad Shrovetide were inspired by Khokhloma. Here I invite my guests to enjoy our Russian generosity.

In the past, Shrovetide was the time when a future marital union was arranged. So, the Narrow Shrovetide was dedicated to the family of a bride getting acquainted and agreeing a union with the groom, and, provided all went well, the Broad Shrovetide saw the reciprocal visits from the bride’s parents to the groom’s house. The union would be consecrated after the Lent.
Below are two recipes of thin pancakes we cook each Shrovetide. They are served with sour cream, honey, cottage cheese, fish, and caviar.
